Woodland Ruby Anise (Illicium) – 3 Gallon Pot

The Illicium were shipped promptly and arrived in perfect shape. They were nice sized and had a lot of new growth. These are hard to find in my area so I was happy to find Wilson Bros. I have purchased from 3 other online gardening vendors over the past 5 years with very mixed results ranging from poor to good. Thought that I would give Wilson Bros. a try since they had the Woodland Anise I was looking for in stock. Was a bit concerned that shipping them during the heat of August might do them harm but was assured by Angie in customer service that they would arrive quickly via FEDEX and in great shape. I have to say that the quality of the shrubs was well beyond my expectations. The plants were full, well branched and with minimal yellowing of leaves (this is kind of common with Anise shrubs). I watered them well, let them settle down for a few days and planted them. They look great. In fact better even than the same woodland anise plants I had purchased from a local nursery 3 years ago costing 33% more! Was so impressed I placed a much larger additional order for the remainder of plants that I required for the area to be planted. The shrub arrived well packed and In Perfect condition, took too transplant immediately and has grown nicely even though the location was dryer and sunnier than this plant wood like. The shrub was very well packaged and arrived healthy and well. However, be careful when getting it out of the box, since this shrub is very leggy and bushy, so one of the small lower branches got stuck in a crevice and broke off when I got the plant out of the box. But the shrub is very large (for 3 gallon), so you wouldn’t even notice it’s missing a branch. When arrived, it was all covered in flower buds, and two weeks later it started to bloom. Blooms are a bit smaller than I expected, and they point downward, so they are not very noticeable from few yards away. But this change when the shrub grows. And the leaves smell awesome, very strong spicy smell, especially on the sun. I have never seen this plant anywhere in my region, so I’m very excited to have found it, especially for my shady garden. Plant arrived in good time; excellent packaging; nice size. Looked healthy and smells great! It is not in bloom, but there are buds forming and the leaves smell of the Anise. It is rated for my zone, but I have never grown an Anise, so I do not know if it will do well here, but I will find out. Thank you Wilson Broths.
