A handsome and highly adaptable fast growing evergreen flowering shrub that will thrive in sun or shade, the Volcano Cherry Laurel, sometimes referred to as English Laurel, is prized for its high-gloss foliage and fragrant flowers in spring. In spring, abundant fragrant white flowers packed on candle-like spiked clusters are very pretty against the dark foliage, adding to the overall appeal of the plant. Flowers are followed by black berries the birds will appreciate. But what really makes Volcano unique among other cherry laurels is its outstanding, upright-facing, orange-red new leaves, hence its name. The leaves mature to a deep to medium glossy green. Adding up to 18 inches in height per year, Volcano forms an upright dense shrub 4 to 7 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide depending on pruning. It responds very well to trimming so can be kept at half its mature size to fit smaller garden spaces or for a lower hedge in sunny or shady landscape borders and home foundation plantings. An attractive and perfect privacy hedge around a patio or other outdoor sitting or living space.
