Description
With ivory colored buds that burst into fragrant, absolutely beautiful magnolia-like flowers with pure white petals surrounding a purple center, this Allspice is sure to spice up your garden and please the senses from may to July! The large, 3 to 4 inch diameter flowers have a delightful fruity aroma similar to strawberries and melons. Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and an equal to slightly wider spread, the glossy green leaves of spring and summer turn to yellow in fall. Very easy to grow, low maintenance, and insects, critters and deer turn their nose up to it!
‘Venus’ Sweetshrub is a complex hybrid of Calycanthus florida (Carolina allspice), Calycanthus occidentalis (California sweetshrub) and Calycanthus chinensis.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and wide, the Venus White Sweetshrub is ideal for use as a specimen, grouping, background or natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and flowering shrub or woodland borders. Sweetshrub is ideal for planting close to the house near a window or entryway where the fragrance may drift indoors. Plant additional plants by a favorite path or sitting area. A fine addition to cottage, wildlife and North American native plant gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Sweetshrubs are exceptionally easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We’ve seen no serious insect or disease problems and plants are quite drought tolerant when established.
