Description

After years of development and improvement over the original species, meet Temple of Bloom® Seven-son Flower. But don’t let the name fool you…Heptacodium isn’t what most think of when they think of a “flower.” Instead, picture an intermediate crape myrtle or lilac instead…only this one blooms in late summer through fall when we need color in the landscape.

With its 4-season appeal, this underused, easy-to-grow 8 to 10 feet tall small tree is sure to bring a stunning addition to any landscape in USA Zones 5 through 9, which covers most of the United States. In spring, attractive, deeply veined green leaves emerge that are twisted on the tips. Following in mid to late summer, when we need color in the landscape, are numerous clusters of fragrant white flowers the butterflies and hummingbirds will thank you for. The flowers are then replaced with striking, cherry-red bracts that persist though fall. Attractive, peeling tan bark provides winter interest. A truly outstanding tree that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 6 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet or so wide, Temple of Bloom Heptacodium is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny to partially shaded landscape or flowering shrub borders. It can be grown as a shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree that serves well as a focal point specimen in landscape borders or home foundation plantings. A fine addition to fragrance gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 14 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Heptacodium variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

The Temple of Bloom Heptacodium is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers an acid soil and part shade in very dry climates. No pruning is necessary however lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree.

OMG!!! I could not believe how healthy and tall my plant was. I’m 5’5′ and I ordered this plant in a 3 gallon pot but the plant reaches the tip of my nose as if it’s a 7 gallon plant.
